چکیده
Abstract Mating signals of insects do not only attract their intended receivers but also eavesdropping parasites and/or predators. As a result, an arms race between the host or prey and eavesdropper ensues, propelling co‐evolution potentially contributing to diversification. Here, we investigate species interaction fly Ormia lineifrons that uses Neoconocephalus katydids as hosts for its lethal larvae. We surveyed use O . over 2‐year period in Kentucky determined which were used hosts, parasitism rate each katydid host, how many generations per year displays. Bacteria Endosymbiont, Wolbachia, Promotes Parasitism of Parasitoid Wasp Asobara japonica
Wolbachia is the most widespread endosymbiotic bacterium that manipulates reproduction of its arthropod hosts to enhance its own spread throughout host populations. Infection with Wolbachia causes complete parthenogenetic reproduction in many Hymenoptera, producing only female offspring. The mechanism of such reproductive manipulation by Wolbachia has been extensively studied. However, the effe...
متن کاملParasitism of Greenbug, Schizaphis graminum, by the parasitoid Lysiphlebus testaceipes at winter temperatures.
Functional responses by Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson), a common parasitoid of small grain aphids, on greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), were measured at seven temperatures (14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 degrees C) during a 24-h period (12-h light: 12-h dark). Oviposition by L. testaceipes ceased at temperatures <4 degrees C. At all experimental temperatures, a type I, rather than a type ...
متن کاملParasitism patterns and the size–fecundity relationship in the acoustically orienting dipteran parasitoid Ormia ochracea
Female parasitoids are expected to distribute offspring among hosts in a manner that maximizes fitness. Several theoretical and empirical studies have focussed on clutch-size patterns in hymenopteran parasitoids. In contrast, dipteran parasitoids, which differ from hymenopterans in potentially important ways, have received little attention. The phonotactic tachinid fly Ormia ochracea has been i...
متن کاملParasitism of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines by Binodoxys communis: the role of aphid defensive behaviour and parasitoid reproductive performance.
The Asian parasitoid, Binodoxys communis (Gahan) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), is a candidate for release against the exotic soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), in North America. In this study, we examined preferences by B. communis for the different developmental stages of A. glycines and investigated consequences of these preferences for parasitoid fitness. We also de...
متن کاملParasitism and predation of the planthopper Tagosodes orizicolus (Homoptera: Delphacidae) by a dryinid parasitoid in Costa Rica
We analyzed the effect of predation and parasitism by the native dryinid Haplogonatopus hernandezae as a natural enemy of the rice pest Tagosodes orizicolus under controlled conditions in an insectary in Costa Rica. We found no change in the proportion of T. orizicolus nymphs that were fed upon, parasitized, and that showed no apparent damage throughout the adult stage in H. hernandezae, which ...
